PetSafe Wall Entry Aluminum Pet Door
When you get home after a long day, you want to relax on the couch. When your favorite television show is on, you don’t want to miss a moment. Sit back and relax. PetSafe’s Wall Entry Aluminum Pet Door will let your pet control her own schedule.

Picture a door in your utility room instead of your front or back door. Put it in your pet’s favorite spot behind the couch to give her easy access outside. It can also be used between rooms to give your pet her own entry to the bedroom from the hall way when your door is closed. The Wall Entry Aluminum Pet Door gives you the flexibility to install it in a more discreet area than traditional cat doors or dog doors.

Installation is easy:

Anyone with a few DIY skills can install a Wall Entry Aluminum Pet Door in a few hours. After you determine the location for the pet door, find the studs in the area. Locate the center between the two studs, and trace the included template where you want the pet door. Remove the template and cut out the hole in your wall. Then, follow the same process on the outside of the wall. After cutting the openings, install and attach the interior and exterior frames. You are now ready to train your pet. A more detailed installation guide is included and video support for installation of the door is available.

Training your pet:

Teaching your pet to use the door is very simple. You can temporarily tape both flaps up and talk your pet into going through. Encourage your pet with a treat or toys. It works best if you are on one side of the door and your pet is on the other. If she will not go through the door, do not force her. Wait for her to go on her own and reward her with praise when she does.

Sizes to fit any pet:

Wall Entry Aluminum Pet Doors come in three separate sizes to fit any and every pet. The small Wall Entry Aluminum Pet Door is best for pets up to 15 lbs., while the medium sized door is suggested for animals between 16 and 40 lbs. The large door works for pets up to 100 lbs. Each may be installed in interior or exterior wall materials 4 3/4” to 7 1/4" thick. A Wall Extension Tunnel can be purchased separately for installation in thicker walls up to 12”, such as brick.

Excellent Door - Good Security

First, let me explain why some people love this and others have had problems. There is an older model and a new, improved model. They look almost identical but there are two easy to spot differences: the old one has a clear flap and a knob for "range" while the new model has a frosted flap and a flush dial for "sensitivity." I ordered and installed the new model in October in one home and it works flawlessly as further described below. In February I ordered another for our other home but received the older model. After installation it jammed several times in the first couple of days. The problem with the older model is that the flap takes too long to settle after the dog passes through it and it locks too quickly. If the locking motion is activated before the flap stops flapping it is likely to jam. The new improved model has more and stronger magnets to settle the flap quickly and there is a longer (8 second) delay before it locks so it has never jammed on us. I called the manufacturer to tell them of the trouble we were having with the old model and how much better our experience with the new model was. They answered the phone quickly, immediately understood what I was talking about and promptly shipped me the new model as a replacement at no cost even enclosing a prepaid label to return the old model to them. Positively excellent customer service! The frosted flap is a nice improvement as well since it doesn't show nose prints like the clear one.

I installed both PetSafe Smart Doors using the optional wall tunnel kit as I placed these in walls rather than doors. Installation is straightforward and cutting the hole in the exterior wall was the most time consuming part as it's real stucco & lath. TIP: use a diamond cutoff wheel in an angle grinder to cut the stucco. Once the hole was cut the rest of the installation took less than 30 minutes. The other house is wood and it took only a few minutes to cut the exterior hole with a Sawzall.

A nice feature of this unit is the solid plastic flap rather than the flexible flaps on others that need regular replacement. The hard plastic flap should last the life of the product but is replaceable if ever needed. The locking feature is the strong point of this unit as only the pets wearing a pendant can enter the door. Other critters such as stray cats, rodents and squirrels can't get in.

Training the dog was fairly easy. To make sure the dog fit through the door before I installed it, I held the flap open and held a treat in my hand and let him follow my hand as I pulled it through the opening. After a little encouragement he was comfortable walking through the door. Once it was installed my wife and I sat on opposite sides of the door and called him with treats ready. We held it open the first few times and then let him push it open himself. We left the door unlocked and after 10 minutes he was running in and out like it wasn't even there. Then we activated the lock so the pendant would unlock it when he approached the door. Depending on how fast the dog is he may get to the door before it's unlocked which it does with a distinct snapping sound. At first the sound startled him but after lightly bumping his head into the locked door a few times (quite funny to watch!), he quickly learned that the snap means it's OK to proceed so he waits for it and tests it with his paw before going through.
At night we remove his collar to keep him inside. He's taken it to it so well that even when the "people door" is open he prefers to use his private entrance.
Our dog is a 16 pound Shih Tzu and, as long as he doesn't get any bigger, the small size unit is perfect. If you're going to place this in a wall you could frame the tunnel yourself but the custom fit one offered will provide much better weather protection and a better looking and more pet friendly entrance.

Pet Safe versus Ideal

Great door. There are some items that should be reviewed by all whom consider a dog door. Single flap doors sit flush with the door they are installed within. This door has a 3 1/2 " air gap between the flaps when install in a normal exterior door. So, understand that it has an 1 /3/4" bulge on each side of the door rather than flush with the door. The exterior side has a pinch weld seal that mates up to the door that it is being installed in to help seal it against the door. Great design! Sealing the two halves upon installation with a small amount of 100% silicon will help seal the install and provide greater longevity of the door it is installed in. Also the integrity of the dog door itself. I live in central Illinois where the anual average wind speed is 17mph. There are no buildings or lanscape to block the wind here, it just hits the plains and keeps going. No door I have seen will stay closed when the wind blows hard. That is what the slide in panel that will go either on the outside or inside is for. The clear plastic panels are still clear. My dogs (lab and aussie shepperd) had a little trouble getting used to a two flap door. They learned very swiftly how to get through it. It is a larger step for them (approx 5") understanding the thickness versus a single flap door. To all who consider purcahsing a dog door, this is a great door. I will not buy any Pet Safe door! This door does come with real metal screws not plastic. Quality is way better with Ideal! Spend the money. Crazy, it cost $110.00 for the dog door and only $99.00 for a steel slab exterior door to put it in!

Great Pet dog door

This door was easy to install in a wooden door, and seems pretty durable for the month it has been in. Our Great Pyrennees uses it constantly, and it seems pretty sturdy. The magnetic strip at the bottom is a good idea, the flaps close well and haven't blown open on windy days. Overall really nice door for the price.

We have never used a pet door before. After researching all of the doors available, we ordered this one. Wow! What a time-saving tool this is for our King Charles Spaniel. It was easy to install in the wall beside our door. The magnetic (Electronic Muscle Stimulator | Electric Muscle Stimulator ) flaps really work, and keep out unwanted pests and keep in our air and heat. We tried using the door taped open for a day. But after practicing holding a treat on the other side of the door for about ten minutes, our puppy really went for it! We keep it open until we go to bed at night, but we've left it open some nights. Apparently, our doggie smell keeps away the raccoons and the flaps keep in food odors from the house because we haven't experienced any "intruders". This is a sturdy unit that you will just love. You can lock the door from the inside or the outside with the hard cover that slides and locks in place. Super!

Second try for doggie door, looks like we got it right this time

We purchased this door about 6 months ago to replace a PetSafe "smart door" that was an epic failure (see reviews here)

PetSafe SmartDoor, Large (up to 100 lbs)

Our weather is "Ruff" in terms of heat rather than cold, so I can't speak to the door's ability to block cold. But in mid-summer Texas heat, we've found very little air escaping in or around the door.

Our dog has easy access in and out and she goes in and out A LOT. Every squirrel must be chased! The flaps are holding up well so far and we are pleased enough that we are buying another one for a newly constructed house.

Get it right the first time and try this door!

Good door, but collars need work

Overall the door works well, and our main complainy is with the collar. The first collar was the standard one that came with the unit, which managed to fall apart within a week. The company allowed me to upgrade to the more rugged collar for $10, which I did. I also added a piece of electrical tape tightly around the seam of the plastic to make it more difficult for the transmitter to pop open, which has worked out well.

The problem with this collar unit is that it needs to stay directly under the dogs neck, due to the directional sensor. If it moves to the side of their neck or on top of their neck it won't work. For our dog this happens about half the days that he wears it, rendering the door completely useless while we're at work, which is the reason we got the door to begin with. I'm also concerned that he may get locked out of the house on a cold day when the collar gets repositioned. We've tried attaching the unit to other collars (including his invisible fence collar that has prongs), but they all seem to rotate on his neck.

I called the company to see if they had any tips on how to fix this issue, but they had no recommendation for me. If anyone else has experienced a similar problem and figured out a way to fix it, please let me know!
